Grant Shirley Boughton, 71, of Freeport (Choctaw Beach), Florida, passed away May 1, 2016 due to pneumonia. She was surrounded by her wife, children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Henrietta and Judson Boughton of Warner, New Hampshire. She was born November 2, 1944 in Princeton, New Jersey.
As a youth she moved to Sudbury, Massachusetts and then Warner, New Hampshire where she graduated from the Simonds Free High School. She was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America earning the rank of Eagle Scout and attending the 1957 National Jamboree.
She received an appointment to West Point (Class of 1966) and then transferred to the University of New Hampshire where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics in 1966. She earned a second Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from the University of Utah in the 1967, a Master of Science Degree in Astrogeophysics from the University of Colorado in 1970, and Master of Business Administration from Southern Illinois University in 1973. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theology from Saint Leo College in 1993.
She culminated her 32 year career in the U.S. Air Force Reserve in 1996 as a Colonel. Her military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit and the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal. Shirley retired from U.S. Air Force Civil Service as a Program Manager, GS-14 in 1999.
During her retirement years, Shirley devoted herself to AIDS/HIV advocacy, equal rights and equality for all individuals, especially for those who identified with the transgender community. Her volunteer service within the community includes, President of Okaloosa AIDS and Informational Services (OASIS), team leader with Heartsong Gulf Coast, Chair of the Northwest Florida AIDS/HIV Consortium, and Regional and State Representative of Florida American Civil Liberties Union State Board, Committee Member for Diversity Development and Treasurer of the Region 2 Democratic Women's Club of Florida.
Shirley loved to travel and visited many countries throughout her life for both business and pleasure. She was involved in genealogy research and was deeply connected to her Celtic and Norman heritage. She always enjoyed a good Irish whiskey and listening to Celtic music.
She is survived by her wife of 40 years, Carol Ann Hartwell Boughton; two daughters Michelle Stafford and husband Kevin of Littleton, CO, Jennifer Kline and husband John of Century, FL; Son Kevin and wife Lisa of Fort Huachuca, AZ; one sister Winnie Okumura and husband Rick of Vonore, TN; three brothers Pete and wife Judi of Ewing, NJ, John and wife Jill of South Bend, IN, Dave and wife Sherry of Ireland; Sister-in-law Janie Courtois of Freeport, FL; nine grandchildren, Nicholas and Alexander Boughton, Stephanie and Jessica Wood, Ryan Day, Jordan Kline and wife Caitlin, Jennifer Scott and husband Jody, Kaitlyn and Gabrielle Kline; two great grandchildren, Hunter and Logan Scott; and numerous nieces and nephews.
